The different types of air conditioning and how they work
If you’re thinking about investing in an air conditioning unit, there are a few on the market, and you’ll be wondering which one is best for you. In order to make an informed decision, we’ve put together this guide so you can make the best choice.
Firstly, they both work in the same way. They pull in hot air and then run this over the cooling coils, the heat then turns the refrigerant running through the coils into a gas, and a fan cools the gas back into a liquid while blowing the hot air outside.
Portable and window air conditioners do all of this inside one compact unit, whereas central air conditioning requires ducts, a blower and an outdoor condenser unit. The most obvious decision between a portable air conditioning unit and a window air conditioner is that the portable unit sits on your floor with an exhaust vent that connects through a window, whilst a window unit sits in the window itself.
Portable air conditioning
Portable air conditioning offers great flexibility. You can have them in your home short-term or long-term, and you can move them around the rooms of your house depending on where you need them.
They are very easy to install, you simply take them out of the box and plug them in without any need to change your windows. You can also pack them up and put them away for winter if you no longer need them.
Window air conditioning
Window air conditioning provides a more permanent option, with slightly less commitment than installing central AC. They’re not as easy to install as portable options, but you can move them around windows if you need to.
Window air conditioning saves room in your house, as the sit in the window frame itself. They are also quieter then portable air con units, as the noise is directed outside your home.
